If he needed Kid to open the safe to save the dog, how did the dog get in there the first place?

The guide to open the safe is on the dog's bandana, so when he opened the safe to check on it's contents the dog went in and he closed it accidentally, he couldn't remember how to open the safe hence why he needed Kid's help.
